Time passed and after about a month I was allowed to leave hospital, shortly after that Valentine’s Day party, but I was still told to stay in New York. The first three months after the operation carry the greatest risk of rejection and I was not going to be able to leave the city until that amount of time had passed. Anita and I settled into our hotel with its spectacular views out over Central Park, while Dr Mancini continued to monitor my every move. I was continuing to receive very large doses of steroids to suppress the immune system, alongside dacluzimab (Zenapax), an immunosuppessive drug which targeted activated cellular receptors responsible for the proliferation of cells that produce rejection, CellCept and a battery of other medicines. The biopsies continued, although with not quite the same frequency, and I was treated for hypertension.
Otherwise, though, life began to resume some degree of normality, although by now I was beginning to be plagued by terrible visions which I will describe in time. Our hotel was located at the other side of Central Park from the hospital but we were not too far away and we were very comfortable: we could take walks in the park, cook in our own kitchen and take advantage of all the facilities of the hotel.
According to Anita, it was not long at all before I began to feel a new lease of life. ‘You had always had such a fiercely independent personality, but for a while you had had to become dependent on me for all your care,’ she tells me now. ‘But suddenly, you realised you were alive. You had seen your brother succumb to illness so you knew what could have happened, but quite suddenly your confidence became much more buoyant and you very quickly got back to work. You didn’t want anyone to stop you and I didn’t want to stop you. So I just made sure that you were eating properly, getting your medication and resting enough, but it was so good that you were becoming active again.’
The bond between Anita and me deepened more than ever during this time: the medication I was on would sometimes affect my mood but Anita was always there, stoic in her support, as our relationship became ever deeper, stronger and more understanding of one another. ‘You never complained, you never felt sorry for yourself, you never voiced any frustration as such,’ Anita says. ‘If you were feeling anything there might have been the odd moment of irritability but you tended to make a joke about it, about all the medicines and supplements you had to take.’
Another person who came into our lives at that point and is still there is Kathleen Ullmann, a gentle and caring woman who is a massage therapist with a speciality in craniosacral therapy, which seeks to relieve pain and tension by manipulating the skull and AMMA, a form of acupressure, and reflexology. ‘I was working in Columbia Presbyterian Hospital as one of the massage therapists in the then integrated medicine program,’ she recalls many years later.
